Advanced Retina Scan Technology

Comprehensive Imaging for Early Detection

Comprehensive Retina Scan & Imaging

At View Optometrist Eye Care Center, we use state-of-the-art retinal imaging technology to provide a detailed view of your eye's interior, allowing for early detection of eye diseases and monitoring of your overall health.

What is a Retina Scan?

A retina scan is a non-invasive imaging procedure that captures a detailed photograph of the back of your eye, including the retina, optic disc, and blood vessels. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of your eye that converts light into neural signals sent to the brain.

At View Optometrist, we use advanced Optomap® ultra-widefield retinal imaging technology that captures up to 200 degrees of your retina in a single image – providing a much broader view than traditional methods. This comprehensive approach helps us detect and monitor eye conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed during routine eye exams.

Did you know? Your retina is the only place in your body where blood vessels can be viewed directly without invasive procedures. This makes retinal imaging valuable not only for detecting eye conditions but also for identifying signs of systemic health issues like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.

Benefits of Advanced Retinal Imaging

Early Disease Detection

Identifies signs of retinal diseases before symptoms appear, enabling timely treatment.

Comprehensive Documentation

Creates a detailed baseline of your retinal health to track changes over time.

Non-Invasive Procedure

Quick, comfortable imaging that doesn't require eye drops or direct contact with the eye.

Wide Field of View

Captures up to 200° of the retina in a single image, compared to 45° with traditional methods.

Digital Storage & Comparison

Allows for side-by-side comparison of images from previous visits to identify subtle changes.

Enhanced Patient Education

Helps you better understand your eye health through visual examination of your own retina.

What to Expect During Your Retina Scan

1

Preparation

You'll be seated comfortably in front of the imaging device. Unlike traditional methods, our scans typically don't require pupil dilation, allowing you to resume normal activities immediately after your exam.

2

The Scan

You'll look into the device one eye at a time while a comfortable, low-power laser captures a detailed image of your retina. The process takes just seconds per eye and is completely painless.

3

Review & Discussion

Dr. Zhou will immediately review the digital images with you, explaining the structures of your retina and discussing any findings or areas that may require monitoring.

Conditions Detected Through Retinal Imaging

Diabetic Retinopathy

Damage to blood vessels in the retina caused by diabetes, potentially leading to vision loss if untreated.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Deterioration of the macula, which provides sharp central vision necessary for reading and driving.

Retinal Detachment

Separation of the retina from its supporting tissue, requiring immediate medical attention.

Glaucoma

Damage to the optic nerve often caused by elevated eye pressure, which can lead to vision loss.

Hypertensive Retinopathy

Retinal changes due to high blood pressure that can indicate cardiovascular health issues.

Retinal Vein or Artery Occlusion

Blockage of blood vessels in the retina, similar to a stroke in the eye.

Choroidal Nevus

A benign pigmented growth under the retina that requires monitoring for potential changes.

Optic Nerve Abnormalities

Conditions affecting the optic nerve that can impact vision and may indicate neurological issues.

Regular Monitoring is Essential

Many eye conditions develop slowly and without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Annual retinal imaging allows us to detect subtle changes that might indicate developing problems, often years before you would experience any vision changes or discomfort.

Who Should Get a Retina Scan?

Doctor examining retinal scan results with patient

While retinal imaging is beneficial for everyone, it's especially important for:

  • Adults over 40 - As age-related eye diseases become more common
  • People with diabetes - Who are at higher risk for diabetic retinopathy
  • Patients with high blood pressure - Which can cause changes in retinal blood vessels
  • Those with family history - Of retinal diseases, macular degeneration, or glaucoma
  • Patients experiencing - Flashes of light, new floaters, or distorted vision
  • Anyone with high nearsightedness - Which increases risk for retinal detachment

Even if you don't fall into these categories, routine retinal imaging provides valuable baseline documentation of your eye health that becomes more important with each passing year.
