Eye Pressure Check & Monitoring
Advanced Testing for Glaucoma Prevention
Comprehensive Eye Pressure Testing
At View Optometrist Eye Care Center, we use state-of-the-art technology to measure and monitor your eye pressure, a critical factor in detecting and managing glaucoma and maintaining overall eye health.
What is Eye Pressure?
Eye pressure, or intraocular pressure (IOP), refers to the fluid pressure inside the eye. This pressure helps maintain the eye's shape and proper functioning. Normal eye pressure generally ranges from 10-21 mmHg (millimeters of mercury).
Why Monitor Eye Pressure?
Elevated eye pressure is a major risk factor for glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness. Regular eye pressure monitoring is essential for early detection and management of glaucoma and other ocular conditions.
Who Needs Regular Pressure Checks?
Everyone should have their eye pressure checked during routine eye exams. More frequent monitoring is recommended for those with glaucoma, family history of glaucoma, previous eye injuries, or certain medical conditions.
The Silent Nature of Pressure Problems
High eye pressure typically causes no symptoms in its early stages. By the time you notice vision changes, permanent damage may have already occurred. Regular eye pressure checks are essential for detecting problems before they affect your vision.
Our Eye Pressure Testing Methods

At View Optometrist, we offer multiple methods for measuring eye pressure to ensure accuracy and patient comfort. Dr. Zhou will select the most appropriate method based on your individual needs and comfort level.
Non-Contact Tonometry (Air Puff Test)
Uses a gentle puff of air to measure eye pressure without touching the eye. Quick and completely painless, this is the most common screening method.
Benefits: No eye drops needed, very quick procedure, completely non-invasive
Goldmann Applanation Tonometry
The gold standard for measuring eye pressure. A small probe gently touches the cornea (after numbing drops) to provide a highly accurate pressure reading.
Benefits: Most accurate method, considered the clinical standard for pressure measurement
iCare Tonometry
Uses a lightweight probe that makes momentary, gentle contact with the cornea. No air puff or numbing drops required.
Benefits: Minimal discomfort, rapid results, suitable for children and sensitive patients
What to Expect During Testing
Eye pressure testing is quick (takes just seconds per eye), painless, and performed as part of your comprehensive eye examination. There's no preparation needed, and you can immediately resume all normal activities afterward.
Risk Factors for Elevated Eye Pressure
How Often Should You Have Your Eye Pressure Checked?
Ages 18-39
Every 2-4 years, or more frequently if you have risk factors for glaucoma
Ages 40-64
Every 1-2 years, depending on your individual risk factors and overall eye health
Ages 65+
Annually, or as recommended by your eye doctor based on your eye health
Understanding Your Eye Pressure Results
While normal eye pressure typically ranges from 10-21 mmHg, it's important to understand that:
- Normal pressure doesn't guarantee no glaucoma. Some individuals develop glaucoma despite having "normal" pressure readings (normal-tension glaucoma).
- High pressure doesn't always mean glaucoma is present. Some people can have higher than average pressure readings without developing glaucoma (ocular hypertension).
- Pressure can fluctuate throughout the day. Multiple measurements taken at different times may be necessary to accurately assess your eye pressure.
At View Optometrist, Dr. Zhou will thoroughly explain your pressure readings in the context of your overall eye health and risk factors, ensuring you understand what your results mean for your vision care plan.

If Elevated Eye Pressure is Detected
If your eye pressure is higher than normal, Dr. Zhou may recommend:
Additional Testing
- Visual field testing to check for peripheral vision loss
- OCT imaging to assess the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer
- Gonioscopy to examine the drainage angle of your eye
- Pachymetry to measure corneal thickness
Management Plan
- Prescription eye drops to lower pressure if necessary
- More frequent monitoring of your eye pressure
- Referral to a glaucoma specialist if needed
- Lifestyle recommendations to support eye health
